Abstract

In the Woongjin period of Baekje, Ornamental Belt Fittings(帶裝飾具) functioned not merely as decorative accessories for belts but as visual symbols representing the wearer’s political and social status. The concentration of these artifacts, particularly in the Songshan-ri Tomb Group(宋山里古墳群), suggests that they were predominantly used by royal family members. However, previous studies have largely remained at the level of assuming royal usage, without clarifying the specific wearers or the principles behind their use. This study aims to address that gap by examining how Ornamental Belt Fittings were linked to the evolving status of Baekje royalty during the political and social restructuring of the Woongjin period. The pattern of royal concentration in the use of Ornamental Belt Fittings is closely related to the circumstances of systemic reorganization following the fall of Hanseong and the subsequent relocation of the capital. During this transitional period, the monarchy and aristocracy competed over the direction of the new political order, and the role and prominence of the royal family increased to a certain extent. However, due to the limitations of rank and office systems at the time, the royal family did not attain absolute political superiority over the aristocracy. Consequently, the royal house, led by the king, sought a supplementary means to symbolically emphasize its exclusive status—one such method being the strategic deployment of Ornamental Belt Fittings. These items were likely selected because they served as appropriate symbolic counterparts to the seals (印綬) worn by the highest aristocratic ranks, which signified the possession of both official titles and noble ranks. Nevertheless, based on the current archaeological evidence from the Woongjin period, it is unlikely that Ornamental Belt Fittings were uniformly distributed to all royal family members. Nor is there strong evidence to suggest that their usage was directly tied to rank or official post. Rather, it is more plausible that their use was restricted to a select group of royals who had been granted specific honorific titles, such as Gunho (君號).
