Abstract
This study aims to map out an effective teaching plan of Korean reading in order to help improve Korean language skills of learners with multicultural background. For this purpose, we examined characteristics and advantages of the Krashen’s free voluntary reading program, and tried to implement it with traditional Korean fairly tales. The growing number of multicultural learners, the change in the composition of the group, and the fact that a growing number of multicultural learners give up their studies constitute the purpose of this study. In fact, before 2007 the vast majority of multicultural families were formed by overseas (Chinese) Koreans who shared some kind of cultural homogeneity. However, the situation began to change in 2009, and according to the survey conducted in November 2015, more than 80% of multicultural families are now formed by a variety of different nationalities. To cope with the situation, several studies suggested to use the Krashen’s free voluntary reading program that utilizes extensive reading methods in order to compensate for the limits of the KSL curriculum and help overcome the lack of motivation to study in the multicultural families. This study attempts to use traditional fairy tales with their automaticity and reading fluency help understand the meaning, and incorporate them into the extensive reading methods. From a linguistic standpoint, the fairy tales are simple, concise and repetitive, and thus considered favorable for learning Korean. From a subjective standpoint, they cover both national values and traditional culture, and are also ethical, universal and have morals which make them suitable for the learners. Moreover, from a justificative standpoint, the fairy tales form meaning-ful texts that induce self-regard and motivation in the learners.
