본 연구는 탈북대학생의 남북한 교육경험을 질적으로 탐색하고, 북한에서의 경제적 배경과 교육 경험이 한국 대학에서의 학업적응에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 구체적인 사례를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이를 위해 북한에서 공교육과 사교육을 경험한 탈북대학생 7명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 북한에서 가정의 경제적 지위가 높은 참여자들은 공교육의 공백이 없고, 사교육 경험까지 더해져 북한에서의 교육 자본이 풍부했으며, 이러한 교육자본은 한국 대학 학업 적응에 긍정적 영향을 주고 있었다. 특히 수학, 과학 등의 북한 사교육 경험은 기초학력으로 작용하여 한국대학에서의 학업 적응에 도움이 되었지만, 영어와 글쓰기 등의 영역에서는 추가적인 지원이 요구되었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 탈북대학생의 특성을 반영한, 구체적인 맞춤형 교육지원 체계의 필요성을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study qualitatively explores the educational experiences of North Korean defector university students, analyzing specific cases to understand how economic backgrounds and educational experiences in North Korea affect their academic adjustment in South Korean universities. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven defector students who had experienced both public and private education in North Korea. Findings revealed that participants from higher socioeconomic backgrounds in North Korea had greater educational capital due to consistent public education and additional private tutoring, positively influencing their academic adjustment in South Korea. Private education experiences in North Korea particularly aided foundational skills in math and science, whereas further support was needed for subjects significantly differing between the two Koreas, such as English and writing. The study highlights the necessity of tailored educational support systems considering the unique backgrounds of defector students.
