Abstract

This study is a phenomenological investigation into how marriage migrant women experienced their children’s online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research focused on ten marriage migrant women with young elementary school children residing in Gyeonggi Province, exploring the challenges they faced in supporting their children’s online education and the essence of their experiences. The difficulties faced by these women were primarily due to their limited digital literacy and Korean language proficiency, which exacerbated their children’s learning disparities. The study’s findings are categorized into the following themes: “Not knowing what’s written in the notice, yet having to navigate online classes,” “An easy or difficult process, depending on the individual,” “Different smart devices for each household,” “Concern about the family’s financial situation being visible through the camera,” “Rapid progress with no chance to catch up,” and “Even though it’s online learning.” This study emphasizes the need for digital literacy education for marriage migrant women to prevent them from becoming marginalized in their children’s education. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of developing policy alternatives based on their experiences in preparation for future crises.
