King and Mother: The Posthumous Promotion of King's Natural Mother in Early Seventeenth-Century Korea

본고에서는 광해군의 생모인 恭嬪金氏의 왕후 추숭 과정을 인목대비에 대한 정치적 압박과 관련하여 살핀다. 광해군이 생모를 왕후로 추숭하고 인목대비를 모후로 인정하지 않으려 한 근본 이유는 자신이 적자(대군)가 아니라는 출신상의 약점을 극복하기 위함이었다. 懿仁王后와 仁穆王后(인목대비)로 이어지는 선조의 嫡妃를 의인왕후와 恭聖王后(공빈김씨)로 바꿈으로써 스스로 적자가 되려 한 것이다. 따라서 광해군의 생모 추숭작업과 인목대비에 대한 압박은 상관적일 수밖에 없었다. 실제로, 7년에 걸친 생모 추숭 과정(1610~1617)과 5년에 걸친 대비 유폐 과정(1613~1618)은 시기적으로도 거의 일치할 뿐만 아니라, 인목대비 유폐를 위한 본격적인 논의는 공빈의 추숭이 완벽하게 마무리된 지 불과 달포 만에 갑자기 시작되었다. 이런 타이밍을 우연으로 볼 수는 없다. 이런 문제의식에 기초하여, 본고에서는 먼저 추숭의 전 과정을 사실적으로 재구성하고 해석하되, 광해군의 입장과 역할에 중점을 두어 추숭과 유폐의 상관성을 밝힌다.
Abstract
King Kwanghae(r. 1608-1623) devoted all his energies to promote his deceased birth mother to the rank of queen and would not recognize the queen dowager as his mother because he wanted to defeat the defect of his being born of a palace concubine, not of a queen. By promoting his birth mother, therefore, he wanted to transform himself from a secondary son (sŏja: the son of a concubine) to a primary son (chŏkcha: the son of a wife). The posthumous promotion of king's birth mother was thus closely related to the incidental demotion of the queen dowager. In fact, it was not an accident that a series of accusations against the queen dowager of being in cahoots with so-called traitors started only a month after the seven-year process of the posthumous promotion of king's birth mother was completed. In this view, this paper looks at the interrelationship between the posthumous promotion of king's natural mother and his attack on the queen dowager, his legitimate mother.
