Abstract
This study analyzes differences in noun usage through natural language processing (NLP), in high-quality argumentative essays, to provide foundational insights for developing logical expression and persuasive writing skills in sixth-grade students. Among 31 essays examined, four demonstrating strong argumentative structure and persuasive quality were compared with 27 less persuasive essays. NLP techniques, including Document-Term Matrix (DTM) for frequency analysis, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) for importance assessment, comparative analysis of exclusive nouns, cosine similarity for intertext similarity, and word cloud visualization, were employed. The findings reveal that noun usage between the two groups is relatively similar, but overall textual similarity remains low. This suggests that differences in argumentative writing quality may stem from variations in other linguistic elements—such as parts-of-speech usage, sentence and paragraph structure, and discourse organization—than from noun usage alone. While previous studies have examined noun usage in middle school level argumentative writing, research focusing on elementary school students remains limited. By identifying how noun usage varies with argumentative writing proficiencyamong sixth grade students, this study lays the groundwork for further research in this field.
