Abstract

This study is to use Chuangtzu as reference for reading a group of Lee Seong-seon’s poems in which ‘butterfly’ appears. It seems that there are large number of his works that are influenced directly by Chuangtzus imagination, and he does not insert Chuangtzus idea into his works, but he uses and deforms the idea for his poems in the focus of peculiar circumstances and necessity of his works. In the body of this study, it has been explored what meaning the episode of ‘butterfly dream’ has in the original context of Chuangtzu and how this episode can be explained, and further it has been searched out what the original context has as its rough characteristics referring to other phrases which state and differentiate reality and dream respectively. Then, this study moves on to check out a few evidences of the poet’s experience of reading Chuangtzu or his interests on Chuangtzus thoughts, and it analyzes and compares his representative poems which deals with the episode of ‘butterfly dream’ and, in the mean time, examines their expressive and contextual characteristics. These result in the conclusion that, in Lee Seong-seon’s poems, appearance of butterfly and contrast apposition of two worlds, reality and the other, embody value-oriented wishes. In addition, he regards reflections in the water as appearance of ‘the other’ world which is mentally improved not as simple indication of reality. To be short, it could be concluded therefore that the poet understands the episode of ‘butterfly dream’ and the two worlds’ ambivalence differ from original context, Chuangtzu and he uses effectively this conclusion as an important premise for his poem writing for a long time. Taking this meaningful relations between Lee Seong-seon’s texts and Chuangtzu as a clue, this study examines how philosophy and thoughts influence and affects on his poems in the consistent process of the poet’s pursuit.
