Abstract

The purpose of this article is to shed new light on the ecological thoughts revealed in the ecopoetry of the Korean poet Lee Sung-seon. The essence of Lee Sung-seon’s poetry is his ecological thoughts reflecting deep ecology which give birth to the rich resonance of cosmic order through the conversation between man and nature. I used Arne Naess & Fritjof Capra’s Deep Ecological Thinkings, and Lee Sungseon’s essay on poetry, Buddhist ecology, modern physics in the analysis of works of Lee Sung- seon In this respect, his poetry stresses a sense of the universe as a bodily or corporeal being. This kind of sense deepens as it begins to recognize the fact that all living things in the universe are not unchangeable but changeable existence all the time. ‘Changing the body to another order’ in his poetry is possible because there is a world of insubstantiality or changeableness which means that no existence is fixed and unchangeable. Through ‘changing the body to another order,’ Lee Sung-seon simply reaches moments when he transforms his self in everyday life into an ecological self. After that, it is impossible for us to separate his self in everyday life from his ecological self. Hence comes his distinctive individuality. It may be that Seoraksan Mountain has incessantly acted upon his life and ecological thoughts. It have built a substantial house in his interior through his meditation and Zen. It can be said that he creatively makes that the most of the notion of ‘Conatus’, a central theme in the philosophy of Spinoza, and the deep questioning process mostly emphasized by Arne Naess, in his own way in order to realize ecological thinking of hia own. It is possible for us to recognize harmonious objects in nature when we contrast them with contaminated objects in the material world of modernity. It is judged that Lee Sung-seon’s ecopoetry manifest itself in his spirituality to avoid the monster called modernity represented by science and material civilization. The contaminated reality including such aspects as the destruction of community and chaotic order is responsible for his longing for harmonious order in this unharmonious world. The higher his nature poetry based on his lucid spirituality above-mentioned can be valued the more severely the secularity in this world prevails.
