이 논문은 이성선 시의 구도적 성격을 살피고, 그의 시에 지속적으로 등장하는 관능적 이미지의 성격을 검토하였다. 이는 그의 시의 자연 표상과 종교적 성격의 구체적 의미를 해명하는 작업으로써, 그동안 <순수, 무위, 구도적 염결성, 노장적 시학> 등의 관점에서 그의 시를 조명한 기존 연구를 비판적으로 갱신하고자 한 연구이다. 이성선의 시는 ‘나’를 찾는 작업이며 동시에 온갖 편견과 고정 관념으로 구성된 ‘사회적 자아’를 탈피하고자 한다는 점에서 불교적 사유에 닿아 있지만, 구체적인 교리나 종교적 관념을 담고 있지 않다는 점에서 오랜 시간 동안 ‘자력구원’의 상상력에 노출된 동양문화권의 보편적 사유에 가까운 것이라고 할 수 있다. 오히려 이성선은 기독교의 인격적 신에 가까운 절대적 존재와의 내밀한 교감의 언술 형식을 시에 수용함으로써 우주적 삼라만상 속에 실현되는 ‘우주적 자아’를 형상화하는 데 성공한 것으로 보인다. 즉 그의 시는 소재나 내용의 측면에서는 불교적 성격을 띠고 있지만 구도의 형식을 구성하는 방식에서는 기독교적 형식을 결합함으로써 자아의 각성과 발견이라는 테마를 내밀한 관계 속에 구축하는 독특함 경지를 성취한다. 이는 동양적 구도 개념의 육화이며, 구도의 내적 긴장을 위한 내면 공간의 형성이라는 점에서 의미 있는 성과이다. 자연에 대한 관능적 이미지도 이러한 구도의 성격과 밀접하게 관련된다. 그에게 자연은 고정된 자아의 경계를 지우고 우주적 자아에 이르는 구도적 여정의 일환이라고 할 수 있는데, 이때 개진되는 관능적 상상력은 자연 사물들로 구성되는 우주적 자아, 자연과의 합일의 과정에서 성취되는 존재의 원초성을 구체화하는 기능을 담당한다. 이성선 시의 내밀한 언술 형식과 관능성은 관계 속에 구성되는 본연의 자아를 육화하고 실현하는 전략적 기지(基地)라고 할 수 있다. 물론 그의 시에 나타난 성적․관능적 이미지는 구도의 의미로써 온전히 해명하기 어려울 만큼 집요하면서도, 한편으로는 그 자체를 목적으로 하는 순수-관능의 성격을 띠고 있어서 별도의 논의가 필요해 보인다.
Abstract
This thesis studies the characteristics of the poem of Lee Sung Seon that seek after truth and reviews the characteristics of sensuous image that frequently appears in his poems. It is the way to explain the specific meaning of the natural representation and the religious characteristics of his poems. It criticizes previous researches that analyzed his poems with the viewpoint of purity, inactivity, integrity of truth and poetics of Lao-tzu and Zhuāngzǐ The poems of Lee Sung Seon try to search for ‘me’. It is related to Buddhist idea in the point that it tries to escape from ‘social identity’ that is composed of many prejudices and fixed ideas. But it doesn’t include specific doctrines or religious concept. So it could be said that it is near to general idea of eastern culture that is exposed to imaginative power of ‘one’s own salvation’ for a long time. Instead, Lee Sung Seon seems to succeed in formalizing ‘cosmic self’ that is achieved in all nature universe by accepting the linguistic technique of intrinsic rapport with absolute being that is similar to personal god of Christianity. His poems show Buddhist characteristics in the material and contents. But it includes Christian form in the way of forming the type of seeking after truth to achieve the uniqueness of establishment of the theme of awakening and discovery of identity in private relation. It is the systemization of the eastern culture that seeks after truth. It is a meaningful achievement in the point that it forms internal space for the tension of seeking after truth internally. The sensuous image for the nature is closely related to the characteristics of seeking after truth. For him the nature is a link of journey of seeking after truth that leads to cosmic identity setting up the boundary of fixed identity. The imaginative power being stated in this point plays the role of specifying the originality of being achieved in the course of unity with cosmic identity and the nature that is composed of natural objects. The private linguistic technique and sensuous characteristics of the poems of Lee Sung Seon are strategic base that systemizes and achieves the original self that is composed in the relation. Of course the sexual and sensuous image that appears in his poems is so complicated that it is hard to complete explain with the meaning of seeking after truth. But it has the characteristics of purity-sense that maintains its own purpose requiring separate discussion.
