Abstract
As climate change intensifies, natural disasters are becoming more frequent globally, leading to increasingly severe health impacts on populations. This study investigates the long-term health effects of typhoons by examining how Typhoon Rusa (2002) affected birth outcomes among pregnant women. In Gangneung, a heavily affected region, pregnant women exposed to the typhoon during early pregnancy gave birth to babies weighing an average of 52g less compared to unexposed women. This negative impact was particularly pronounced among vulnerable groups: economically inactive mothers, older mothers, and those with lower educational attainment. Notably, the significant differences disappeared when researchers adjusted the control group to include geographically adjacent areas in a sensitivity analysis. This suggests that both individual characteristics and regional factors influence typhoon effects. These results emphasize the need for comprehensive disaster response policies that consider both micro-level and macro-level factors when addressing disaster health impacts.
