Abstract

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced by ultraviolet (UV) rays and breathing, have been identified as a major cause of skin aging. Excessive ROS destroy antioxidant defences, damage skin cells and tissues, and accelerate aging. Constant oxidative stress promotes symptoms of aging, such as loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles, blemishes, and freckles. Therefore, an important research focus is to develop antioxidants to remove ROS and to prevent skin aging. In our study, we evaluated the antioxidant activity and the melanin synthesis ability of S. amara, a plant living in the Amazon rainforest, by using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay, reducing power, and DOPA analysis. In neutralizing ROS, the absorbance value of S. amara showed significant antioxidant activity compared to that of vitamin C. Furthermore, DOPA and reduced power analyses revealed that S. amara could promote melanin synthesis and protect against oxidation-induced damage. Our results suggest that S. amara protects the cell membrane and effectively inhibits ROS that contribute to skin aging.
