Abstract

Cutaneous hyperpigmentations including melasma, freckles and senile lentigines are common pigmentary disorders to humans that become more prominent with aging, especially among Asians. Melanogenesis is the enzymatic and nonenzymatic oxidative reaction which initiates from stable tyrosinase. The regulation of melanogenesis has focused on factors affecting tyrosinase, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step of the melanogenic phathway. Antioxidants could play some roles in inhibiting melanogenesis through reduction of oxidative stress. In this study several plant extracts(strawberry, dropwort, crown daisy, chinese quince, cinnamon, lavender, parsley, marigold, kiwi, arnica, licolice, eleltherococus senticosus), which are known to have anti‐oxidant effect, examined free radical scavenging activity and their effects on melanogenesis using cell proliferation assay, tyrosinase activity assay, and melanin content assay in B16 melanoma cells. The plant extracts arnica, eleltherococus senticosu, chinese quince, lavender, marigold, cinnamon showed more than 50% inhibition of free radical production at the below concentration of 300 ㎍/ml. The plant extracts of strawberry, dropwort, crown daisy, chinese quince, cinnamon, lavender, parsley showed inhibitory effect on melanogenesis Mechanism of melanogesis inhibition was noted through inhibitory action of tyrosinase There was no significant relation between radical scavenging activity of plant extracts and inhibitory action of melanogenesis.
