본 연구는 경찰청에서 활용하고 있는 폴리그래프 검사 정확성을 추정하기 위해 실시하였다. 이를 위해서 2015년에서 2019년 사이에 실시한 폴리그래프 검사 중 하나의 범죄사건에서 두 명의 검사 대상자가 서로 상반된 주장을 하는 사건을 선정하였으며, 진실반응과 거짓반응으로 명확하게 결과가 도출된 사건을 분석에 활용하였다. 총 123건(246명)을 분석한 결과, 거짓에 대한 탐지율(민감도)은 90.7%이며, 거짓을 말하는 사람을 진실로 판단하는 오류부정율은 9.3%로 나타났다. 또한 진실에 대한 탐지율(특이도)은 87.5%이며, 진실한 사람을 거짓으로 판단하는 오류긍정율은 12.5%로 확인되었다. 이러한 연구결과는 현장연구의 한계점으로 지적되는 방법론적 타당성에 대한 문제를 극복했다는 점에서 의의가 있으며, 경찰청에서 실시하고 있는 폴리그래프 검사의 정확성과 오류율을 정확히 파악하는데 유용하게 활용될 것으로 판단된다.
Abstract
This study explored the accuracy of polygraph tests on field cases in the Korean National Police Agency. All records of polygraph testing conducted during 2015–2019 were screened to identify cases in which two individuals presented opposing opinions on the same case. Among them, only non-deception indicated (NDI) and deception indicated (DI) cases were used in the analysis. Finally, 123 cases (246 individuals) were included in the present study. Results indicated an accuracy rate of 0.907 in detecting guilt (sensitivity), with a false negative rate of 0.093. Additionally, an accuracy rate of 0.875 (specificity) was observed in detecting innocence, with a false positive rate of 0.125. The importance of the present field study lies in the fact that, due to the unique methodology, it was not subjected to weaknesses usually found in polygraph field validity studies. These findings may help the accurate estimation of the validity of polygraph testing in field cases in the Korean National Police Agency.
