Culture Education Materials of Elementary English Textbooks as a Means to Develop Intercultural Communicative Competence

The purpose of this study is to examine the appropriateness of culture education materials of the five kinds of the 3rd grade and the 4th grade elementary English textbooks as a means to develop intercultural communicative competence. The materials were analysed in terms of contents, teaching methods, and integration with language learning activities. The results show that while textbooks provide adequate cultural contents, contents dealing with cultural perspectives are minimally included and cultures of countries in African, South American, North Pole, and Arctic continents are marginally presented. Teaching methods are unvaried and opportunities to learn through experience are not utilized. The degrees of integration of culture education with language learning activities are varied. Implications for teaching and textbook developing are discussed and further studies suggested.
