The Silence of Korean Students in English Classrooms: A Confucian Perspective

한국 영어교육의 최대 약점은 오랜 동안 이루어진 엄청난 영어교육 개혁에도 불구하고 의사소통능력 향상의 부진이다. 중-고등학교에서 영어를 가르쳤던 미국의 평화봉사단이 철수한 후 1980년대 초 4차 교과과정의 개혁 이후 줄곧 강조되어 온 것이 영어교육에 있어 의사소통능력의 발달이지만, 그 후 30여년이 지난 지금에 와서도 크게 개선된 바는 없다고 봐도 무방할 것이다. 영어교육의 현장인 교실에서의 실제 상황은 1960년대 초의 문법-번역식 교수방법이 오늘에도 여전히 유효함을 알 수 있는 바, 이는 당시의 영어 시험문제와 오늘날의 영어 시험 문제를 비교해봄으로써 알 수 있다. 따라서 영어 말하기에 관한한 한국의 영어교실은 사실상 지금까지도 침묵 (silence)의 장에서 벗어날 수 없게 된 것이 사실이다. 이 논문에서는 이 고질적인 영어교실의 침묵현상이 단순히 영어교재나 교수요목의 개선, 또는 학습단위의 최소화 및 원어민 교사확보 등과 같은 이른바 마이크로 수준의 교육학적 접근으로 개선될 문제가 아니며, 한국사회를 사회문화적으로 지배해온 유교문화의 전통에서 비롯된 것임을 밝혀보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 유교의 교육관에서 나오는 침묵의 철학적 의미와 유교의 교육기관에서 시행해왔던 학습방식 및 학습태도에 관한 규율 등을 유교의 고전인 논어에서 찾아내고자 하는 시도를 하였다. 그러나 필요에 따라서는 대학과 중용, 맹자 등의 다른 고전의 사상도 참고하였다.
