Abstract
An authentic research for self in Indian thought originated from Upaniṣads. In the ear of ritualristic Brāhmaṇas, the primary duty is adherence to dharmas given by Veda. In this case, we only follow the given rules of order(ought to) and prohibition(should not). Therefore, the philosophical question about the self was not so important. But when it comes to the ear of jñana-based Upaniṣads, the question of self comes up as the main problem. A complete realization of the concept of the Puruṣa or Ātman is in itself consistent with the enlightenment or liberation in Yoga. Yoga is ultimately aimed at achieving absolute freedom or enlightenment through various practicing exercises in accordance with physical, mental and spiritual performances derived from ancient India. The approach of yoga practice can be roughly divided into three parts: the body (śarīra), the mind (manas), and the soul (ātman). First, the yoga of the body is performed mainly by the methods related to the bodily practice, such as asana and prāṇāyāma. Next, the yoga of the mind is the method of exploring the inner consciousness. Finally, the yoga of the soul directly explores the self itself, Yoga emphasizes the sādhana(practice), while most Indian philosophy is aimed at theoretical knowledge. Therefore, the theory that is the basis of yoga sādhana follows the existing thought. Because of these characteristics, in the beginning, yoga bases on the Sāṁkhya theory and later on the idea of Vedānta. In the Sāṁkhya theory based on asceticism, which means primarily physical asceticism, it aimed at liberation through spirit or consciousness, not physical. It presuppose the complete separation of body and mind. It is Prakṛti as a body, not Puruṣa as the self, that stops the activity completely. After this early Sāṁkhya theory was replaced by the later Vedānta philosophy, Tantrism emphasizes the importance of the body. The human body is understood not merely a product of death and suffering, but an immortal one or the body of the light. Therefore, the body is an important means of liberation that should not be ignored like Sāṁkhya. As a result, we are no longer pursuing the self as ultimate reality beyond body and mind, but sometimes seeking the absolute self, which is transcendent, even when it is all encompassed.
