Abstract
In this thesis, I research what types of yoga practice showed in the classical Upaniṣads, and their connection of Yoga Sūtra of Patanjali. In earlier classical Upaniṣads, there were not shown concrete yoga practices except emphasis of prāṇa, rather the latter period, it showed remarkable ones. The whole practicai method mainly focused on controling the concentration and meditation. Through it, we can grasp the nature of the objects. That is, we end adherence or craving, gradually go to the ultimate goal, realization. So, We can conclude that the yoga in the classical Upaniṣads mainly emphasized to the inner concentration or meditation. From the earlier classical Upaniṣad to the later one, we can see the outer object flowed to the inner one. Nevertheless, there were few comments about the practical methods, especially in earlier classical Upaniṣad, the concrete ways which we know in these days. Of course, neither the Yoga Sūtra of Patanjali. It emphasized clearly control about sensuous elements, so we cannot see detail explanation about progress. In the point of classical Upaniṣadic meditation, the yoga in Patanjali can be regarded as the succession of classical Upaniṣads and the union of various elements. Patanjali synthesized various elements of yoga which were divided into religious sects or groups of practices. So it formed the types of yoga as we know todays. It’s fundamental grounds based on Saṅkhya. But as it decended next generation, the thoughts of Saṅkhya was replaced Advita Vedānta. As a result, on the basis of inner meditation, it pursued deep consciousness as we can notice in Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, on the other hand, it synthesized further primitive practices. It showed complexed features like Tantrism as a new techenic. Moreover, the classical Upaniṣads seemed to have wider methods of yoga practices than the Yoga sūtra of Patanjali. Perhaps Pantanjali classified systematically the philosophical peculiarity among various yoga practices of the sūtra in those days. In other words, in standpoint of Patanjali, the latter methods of yoga which showed in the classical Upaniṣads were regarded as inproper methods. So, they may be excluded.
