Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of the Saito Homa rite practiced in Sinnyoen, a Shingon esoteric buddhism in Japan. Sinnyoen is a sect founded by Ito Shinjo in 1936, and he preaches the teachings of Mahayana in the scriptures of Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. Sinnyoen is an esoteric denomination, it conducts a homa ceremony. In particular, the homa ceremony is held every year through the Saito Homa rite, and this study examined the characteristics and meaning of the ceremony focusing on the Saito Homa rite's ritual process held at Shinchoji annex on October 13, 2024. In this study, in order to conduct such research, the principal researcher first observed the Homa ritual in person and we examined the homa and the procedure and method of Sinnyoen's the Saito Homa ritual. Sinnyoen's the Saito Homa is different from the ritual procedure. of the homa ceremony of the existing Buddhist denomination, and it shows originality while maintaining tradition in terms of utilizing modern music. The Saito Homa rite of Sinnyoen has a social meaning in terms of cultivating devotion through rituals and is valuable in terms of being able to utilize rituals as a method for modern propagation. This study has a limitation that it confirmed only the homa of Sinnyoen, but it is meaningful that it examined the modern meaning through the ritual process. In addition, it is thought that the origin of traditional rituals can be found through the homa ceremony of East Asian countries.
