초록

2024년은 세계 유일의 유엔묘지인 유엔기념공원의 추모관 건립 60주년을 맞이하는 해이다. 유엔 산하 시절인 1964년에 추모관은 한국전쟁 유엔군 전사자를 위한 유엔의 다종교적 표상으로 설립되었다. 본 연구는 추모관 준공 60주년을 기념하여 건립 의의와 평화적가치를 조명하려는 목적에서 실시되었다. 연구과정에서는 미공개 유엔아카이브 및 유엔한국통일부흥위원단(UNCURK) 문서, <대한뉴스>, 영국 아카이브 영상 분석에 더해 유엔아카이브와의 서면질의를 통한 자료 해제 등 史料를 교차 검증하는 방법을 채택하였다. 본문에서는 1960년대 초 유엔기념묘지로의 유엔화 과정에 이어 추모관 준공식 양상과 나라시만(Narasimhan) 유엔 사무차장의 준공식 참석 및 유엔 헌사의 의의를 최초로 검토하였다.연구 결과 추모관은 다국적 유엔군의 단결이 발현된 장소로서 유엔 역사상 중요한 유엔기념묘지의 건축물 제1호였음이 확인된다. 이 기념물은 인류 평화를 염원하는 유엔의 선구안적 이상이 투영된 대상이기에, 오늘날의 제반 폭력/비평화구조에도 본 공간이 갖는 화합의가치는 유효하다. 본고는 유엔 창설 80주년과 한국전쟁 발발 75주년을 앞두고 평화 연구의 지평을 넓혀 다문화 공생사회에 시사점을 지닌다.

Abstract

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the completion of the Memorial Service Hall in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK), this paper is the first critical study to shed light on the significance of the UN architecture in the context of Peace Studies. This research was conducted by reviewing documents from the United Nations Archives Records and Management Section and the United Nations Commission for the Unification and Rehabilitation of Korea, as well as two documentary films from Daehan News and the British Archive. Tracing the UN process of the UNMCK in the early 1960s and the international political backdrop of the United Nations Secretary-General Narasimhan’s tribute and the UN statement, this study scrutinizes the inauguration ceremony of the Memorial Service Hall in 1964. The findings demonstrate that the Memorial Service Hall was the first permanent building in the UNMCK, where the five major religions among the multinational UN forces were represented in unity. As a war monument to peace and projection of the United Nations’ ideal for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula, the memorial space of the Korean War still stands as a valid symbol of reconciliation in today’s violent/non-peace structure.
