Abstract
This study deals with the period that C. L. R. James had actively participated in the national independence of the British West Indies since the late 1950s. James researchers have treated James’s anti-colonial struggles in the British West Indies as politically and ideologically disconnected from his marxist activities in the United states in the 1940s and the early 1950s. It is said that James was apparently quite converted to West Indies nationalism from unorthodox marxist views which rejected the Leninist concept of the vanguard party and emphasized the autonomy of the working class and the masses. This study contends that James’ political strategy for national independence was based on perspectives that he developed as a heretical marxist during the 1940s. James attempted to revise his marxism in the post-colonial situations since the 1950s and to creolize it in the local conditions of the British West Indies. Unlike predictions of orthodox marxism, he recognized that the peasant class, not the working class, in the colonies took the lead in the national liberation movement after World War II, and raised the need to expand their political activities ’from below’ through a participatory democratic mass party. It would help the anti-colonial struggle in the West Indies to get away from the negative influence (neo-colonialism) of the colonial intellectuals and the middle class, and to obtain true independence and liberation based on people’s aspirations. But James’ political attempts eventually failed to encourage the ‘self-activity’ of the colonial masses, because they did not reflect diversity and difference in the British West Indies.
