본고는 프랑스령 알제리의 유대인-무슬림 관계 변화를 무슬림 이웃으로부터의 ‘새로운 반유대주의’에 대한 알제리 유대인의 인식을 중심으로 설명한다. 프랑스령 알제리에서 무슬림은 원주민 지위에 묶인 채 차별을 견뎌야 했던 반면, 유대인은 1870년 크레미외 법령(Décret Crémieux)을 통해 일괄적으로 프랑스 시민권을 획득한 뒤 프랑스 시민으로서의 정체성을 형성해갔다. 이러한 불균등은 두 집단 사이에 긴장 관계를 조성하며 ‘새로운 반유대주의’가 실현될 수 있는 무대를 마련했다. 프랑스령 알제리의 유대인은 알제리 전쟁 초기 ‘모호한 중립’을 표방하며 프랑스 시민의 지위와 무슬림과의 오랜 이웃 관계를 동시에 지켜내려 했지만, 1956년부터 ‘새로운 반유대주의’에 대한 우려를 나타냈다. 수에즈 전쟁 이후 그러한 두려움이 현실화되면서 알제리의 유대인-무슬림 공존의 역사는 독립과 함께 막을 내렸다. 본고는 당대 알제리 유대인 언론 『앵포마시옹 쥐브(Information juive)』를 주요 분석 대상으로 삼고, 알제리와 이웃국가들을 바라보는 프랑스령 알제리 유대인의 시선을 통해, 그들의 ‘새로운 반유대주의’에 대한 두려움과 그 두려움의 현실화가 프랑스령 알제리의 유대인-무슬림 관계 변화에 미친 영향을 확인할 것이다.
Abstract
This study explains the changes in Jewish-Muslim relations in French Algeria, focusing on Algerian Jewish perceptions of ‘new antisemitism’ from their Muslim neighbors. In French Algeria, Muslims were forced to endure discrimination with their native status. In contrast, Jews gained French citizenship en masse through the Crémieux Decree in 1870 and formed their identity as French citizens. This imbalance created tensions between the two groups, setting a stage for the realization of ‘new antisemitism’. In the early stages of the Algerian War, Jews in French Algeria claimed to be neutral ambiguously. They sought to maintain the status of French citizens and hold an amicable relationship with Muslims at the same time. However, they have expressed their concern about ‘new antisemitism’ since 1956. After the Suez War, such fear became a reality in French Algeria and the history of Jewish-Muslim coexistence in Algeria ended with its independence. This study analyzes the contemporary Algerian Jewish press, Information Juive. By exploring how French Algerian Jews viewed Algeria and its neighboring countries, this study will confirm the impact of their fear and the realization of that fear on the changes in Jewish-Muslim relations in French Algeria.
