Abstract
This article attempts to redefine the struggles for liberty in the era of the Haitian Revolution from the experiences of the colored women (female slaves in particular). In this age of the Atlantic Revolution, women of color crisscrossed the Atlantic communities for the sake of better conditions for preserving liberty or to avoid the threat of re-enslavement. Here, we follows a female slave’s transatlantic odyssey for liberty from revolutionary Saint-Domingue through Cuba to New Orleans, which Isabel Allende depicts in her novel, The Island Beneath the Sea (2009). Complemented by historical researches about female slaves and women of color, her story illuminates other aspects of liberty articulated by family, fictive kinship and sisterhood that were invisible in the established narratives of the Haitian Revolution based on armed struggles and political independence. By reconstructing the silenced voices of those subaltern women, we will be able to deepen our understanding of liberty, resistance and agency in studies of the Haitian Revolution and slavery.
