Abstract

This paper aims to analyze Minjin Lee’s Pachinko through the framework of a diaspora narrative. Set over the course of eighty years from 1910 to 1989, Pachinko describes the surviving history of a Korean woman named Sunja Kim and four generations of her family as they navigate through the turbulent years, migrating from Yeongdo, Busan to Ikaino, Osaka, and Yokohama. The author defines Pachinko as a story about finding a home for those who experience expulsion and migration as their nation is colonized. Previous studies have been centered around some topics such as the protagonists’ search for identities, the way place-consciousness shapes the existential characteristics of each character, or the transcending and overcoming process of the existing gender ideology by the female protagonist. However, the central theme of Pachinko, the search for home, has not been adequately explored. Pachinko shows the characteristics of a Korean-Japanese (Zainichi) narrative, diaspora literature, and transnationalist discourse. Despite the fact that they all depict characters who have left their motherland, they differ in the way of dealing with their diasporic experience. The former two tend to resolve their fragmented identities and feelings of loss by assimilating them into the framework of nationhood, while transnationalism sees identity itself as constantly changing and floating, usually transcending borders, and embracing multiple cultures. While Noah and Mozasu, Sunja’s sons who are second-generation immigrants, believe that fixed identities exist and dare not transcend predetermined conditions of existence, such as race, gender, nationality, etc., Sunja, a first-generation immigrant, shows a life of self-choice and self-making, refusing to be pigeonholed into one fixed identity. Hansu Ko is also a typical transnational in this sense, and he becomes a lifelong supporter in Sunja’s journey to find her own home. In conclusion, Pachinko highlights that finding a home is only feasible through solidarity with underdogs and outcasts, not through the generosity of an affluent patron. No matter what ethnicity you are, or no matter where you dwell, you can create a new home by extending a caring hand to minorities and the weak who have been pushed to the periphery of society.
