로스블라트(Sheldon Rothblatt) 교수는 역사적 고찰을 통해 자유교육의 성격이 특정 교과목이나 교과 과정으로 규정된다고 볼 수 없으며, 인격형성, 리더십, 비판적 사고, 폭넓음 등과 같이 흔히 자유교육을 통해 얻게 되는 성과 역시 그렇게 명확한 것은 아니라고 주장한다. 이에 대해 홍성기 교수는 부분적으로 공감하면서도 비판적 견해를 제시했다. 이 글에서는 로스블라트 교수의 견해, 그리고 그에 대한 홍성기 교수의 비판 각각에 대해서 비판적으로 조명한다. 그 과정에서 자유교육의 성격을 교육과정에 의해 규정할 수 없다고 주장했던 듀이(John Dewey)와 밀러(John William Miller)의 견해를 검토하고, 미국의 AAC&U가 21세기의 학부교육이 지향해야 할 모델로 실용적 자유교육을 제시한 것의 의미도 살펴본다. 아울러 마틴(Everett Dean Martin)의 통찰에 따라 자유교육의 정신은 인간의 삶을 더 나은 것으로 변화하도록 하는 데 있다는 점을 받아들인다면, 무엇을 가르치든 반복적인 투입에 의해 직접적인 산출을 기대하는 “훈련”이 아닌 가치와 의미를 얻게 하는 진정한 “교육”을 지향하는 것으로 자유교육의 성격을 규정할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Professor Sheldon Rothblatt endorses the view that the nature of liberal education is not defined by the specific set of subjects. In addition, he suspects the alleged outcome of liberal education such as character formation, leadership, critical thinking, and breadth is not as clear as we assume to be. While acknowledging some of those ideas, Professor SungKi Hong gives a critical review of Rothblatt’s position. In this paper, I examine Rothblatt’s position and Hong’s critical review respectively. I also discuss the ideas of John Dewey and John William Miller regarding the nature of both liberal and practical education. Furthermore, in view of Everett Dean Martin’s insights, I suggest that we can define the nature of liberal education not by what we teach, but rather how we teach, placing an emphasis on the meaning and value of life. For in doing so, we can at least guarantee that no matter what we teach, the “education” will not be reduced to mere “training”.
