삶의 총체적 이상의 구현체로서 직업의 관점에서 본 자유교육의 성격: 전통적 자유교육에 대한 대안 탐색

본 연구의 목적은 듀이의 삶으로서 직업의 아이디어에 근거해서 오늘날의 삶의 조건을 고려한 자유교육의 가능성을 모색하는 것이다. 직업적 활동을 중심으로 현대인의 삶의 조건과 인간적인 삶의 특성은 다음과 같이 정리된다. 1) 인간적인 삶에 있어 진정한 의미의 직업(삶으로서 직업)이란 각자의 삶에 열정적으로 몰입하고 헌신하는 것을 의미한다. 2) 직업은 자신이 하루에 활동하는 시간 중 가장 많은 시간을 차지하는 것이면서, 자신의 삶의 이상을 담고 있으며 삶의 이상을 실현하는 수단이다. 3) 삶의 총체적 이상의 구현체로서 직업은 나의 삶의 전 과정(생애교육)이 직업 그 자체로 의식되는 간접적 직업교육을 시사한다. 이상의 분석에 기초할 때 삶의 총체적 이상의 구현체로서 직업의 관점에서 본 생애교육은 자신의 일을 통해 실제로 해방감을 체험하고, 자신의 삶의 의미와 가치를 보다 넓고 깊게 확대해 나가는 것을 주된 특징으로 한다. 생애교육의 성격과 의미에 토대를 둔 인간적인 삶이란 이원론에 기초한 전통적인 자유교육에 반해서 삶의 세계의 통합적 성격에 근거한 일원론적 자유교육의 가능성을 시사해 준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to make clear and redefine the nature and meaning of liberal education with regard to the concept of vocation as living. For Dewey, the living for intellectual and moral growth is the most important thing; it is the main vocation that human beings has to carry out for the life time. The statement emanates from a search for the ideal living. Accordingly, to study up on the Dewey's standpoint about vocation and vocational activities is to bridge the theoretical gap between liberal and vocational education and to bring out the possibility of vocational activities as the alternative liberal education. From this point of view, this essay puts forward the term, ‘career education’ which signifies indirect vocational education implied in the process of ideal living and general education. The main part of individual life is associated with vocational activities. Vocation embodies the Ideal of an individual; thus human beings achieve their Ideal by accomplishing their vocation. After all, vocational activities can and should function as the main axis to form and achieve the Ideal of one's life. The Ideal is reconstructed and reinterpreted in the process of one's living devoted to the vocation. One's vocation is the major instrument to achieve one's growth and freedom. In conclusion, the vocation as living can be effectively and systematically explained with the term of ‘career education’. The nature and significance of career education can be summed up as follows: 1) career education is primarily relative with vocational education; 2) the reconstruction and realization of Ideal makes the educated persons grow and be free, by which one realizes the Ideal of one's life; 3) in the very sense, career education is equal to liberal education in the perspective of monism.
