Abstract
Professor S. Rothblatt of the United States, argued in the booklet 『The Living Arts』 published by AAC&U in 2003 and in the tenth Blue Waves Lecture Series (滄波講座) held in the summer of 2021: “Any subject, (...) can be taught from a servile (narrow) or liberal (open) perspective.”, “The inevitable conclusion is that the telltale identifying marks of a liberal education are the manner in which a subject is taught or learned, the spirit in which it is offered, and the attitudes that may just result from the teaching and learning.” His assertion is quite different from the viewpoint widely agreed upon by the general education community in South Korea over the past decade, that is, ‘the general education should be reconstructed centering on liberal arts such as the humanities, arts, social sciences, and natural sciences’. Since Prof. Rothblatt's argument came from a comparative historical point of view, that is, a reflection on the history of liberal education and liberal arts that he had studied thoroughly throughout his life, rather than merely from an emphasis on teaching methods. It is difficult to be explained on the basis of simple words like ‘uncommon position.’ In this paper, not to defend the viewpoint of the Korean liberal education community, but to partially and critically consider Professor Rothblatt's argument from a philosophical and methodological point of view. However, it is necessary to emphasize that the criticism that Professor Rothblatt made against the clichéd arguments of the supporters of liberal education is ‘a beauty of critical thinking’ and is very effective.
