Abstract

This study aims to explore the discursive structures of social enterprise’s success in Korea, and the political implications of those. For the purpose of this study, I analyzed occurrence frequencies of social and public interest-based vocabularies and the market-based ones, and network pattern among those vocabularies. Using the results of these analyses as heuristic tools, next, I analyzed discursive structures of Korean social enterprise’s success discourses. The results were as follows: first, in the social enterprise’s success discourses, the ‘success’ was represented as the ‘corporate success in the market.’ The social and public values and interests were marginalized or sometimes those were represented as barriers to the success. Second, social enterprise discourses justified the minimization of the government’s roles and the initiatives of the market, private sector, and individuals. In that sense, the social enterprise’s success discourses were structured on the basis of the neoliberal society-reorganization project, which pursues to reorganize the relationships between the state, the market, private sector, and individuals in new ways. Concerning those two general results of the analyses, there were no significant differences between the Korean progressive presses and the conservative ones. It implies that the Korean progressive’s discourses of social enterprise’s success do not serve as a counter-hegemonic discourses against the Korean conservative’s neoliberal hegemonic discourses. The former are deeply captured into the neoliberal hegemonic discourses. Thus, the former are unintentionally allied with the latter, and reinforce the conservative’s neoliberal hegemony. I argue that this ironic condition is systematically caused by the fact that the Korean progressive’s discourses of social enterprise’s success are framed in the problematization of problem-solving, not cause-analysis.
