Abstract

Social enterprise economy tends to be regarded as an alternative to the patriarchal market economy. In this context, this paper analyzes how social enterprise discourses are organized in relation to gender issues, and interprets the results in terms of the political dynamics surrounding the social enterprises in South Korea. The results are as follows. First, social enterprise discourses subvert the traditional home-workplace model, but reproduces and reinforce it in new ways. Second, the social relationship among the main actors surrounding social enterprises is represented as a community. This community is, however, unique in that it is a market-based community, which is a mixture of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. Finally, despite the rampancy of the feminie languages in social enterprise discourses, the feminie values are allocated outside the social enterprises’ actual activities, e.g., to their future goals to be achieved through their activities. Thus, the market logics enter into the regulations of the social enterprises’ activities. In the social enterprise discourses, the feminine are reframed in the gender hierarchy, and thus, reproduce and reinforce it. Synthesizing the analyses, I demonstrate that the politics of social enterprises is characterized by the neoliberal government mechanisms based on the hegemony of the masculine.
