Abstract

How has social interest in games changed over the past decade? To find the answer, this study used 4,321 game articles from major domestic media to examine ‘the structure of game discourse’, ‘changes in game discourse’, and ‘the impact of media partisanship’ from 2010 to 2020. As a result of the analysis, it was found that Kyunghyang had the largest amount of media coverage on games, and Hankyoreh had the lowest amount. Until the early 2010s, the amount of progressive media coverage was far ahead, but since mid-2010, conservative media have been ahead of progressive media. As a result of the LDA analysis, 15 topics were divided into four discourses: ‘game problem’, ‘economic feasibility of the game industry’, ‘mobile game’ and ‘CSR’. As the view of games that emerged in the early and mid-2010 from the perspective of addiction and pathology has declined to some extent, the view that emphasizes the ‘economic feasibility of the game industry’ and ‘CSR’ has been strengthened. Focusing on ‘mobile game’, there has also been a pattern in which games penetrate into everyday life and become a genre of culture. As a result of the analysis according to the ‘impact of media partisanship’, conservative media showed a higher interest in the ‘economic feasibility of the game industry’ and progressive media showed a higher interest in ‘game problem’. This study aims to contribute to an in-depth understanding of social and cultural changes related to games through a macroscopic and microscopic approach to game discourse.
