Abstract

Interpretation of Yi Yongdo’s spirituality has been broadly done, but there has been no clear study of his nature of anarchism. This thesis discusses about Yi Yongdo’s spirituality, and recaptures his writings from the angle of anarchism. In introduction, this writing criticizes governmental power on the control of people, and anarchistic syndicalism is an alternative to the oppression. On the main body, this thesis describes what anarchism is and connects it with radical mysticism of Christianity. This thesis illustrates Russian anarchist Lev Tolstoy and Japanese Post - Christian scholar Uchimura Kanzo’s influence on Yi Yongdo’s thought. This suggests that their effects instigate his passion to go to anarchistic way of life. Illustrating his life and writing, this thesis proves Yi Yongdo is an anarchist. On conclusion, Rene Girard’s idea of pointing out the problem of human sinfulness caused by a desire of competition must be considered. Receiving his suggestion, this thesis maintains that Christian spirituality should be cautious about an indiscriminate optimism of anarchism. Concluding the discussion, this thesis sustains Christian spirituality-anarchism is needed to be produced, just as Yi Yongdo did.
