이 논문은 중세의 예정론을 다루되 토마스 아퀴나스 사상을 중심으로 탐구한다. 예정론은 교부시대 및 종교개혁 시대만의 교리가 아니라 중세에도 계승되고 가르쳐진 교리였다. 그러나 중세의 예정론에대한 연구는 대단히 미진하다. 물론 이 교리를 논하면서 중세의 인물들 중에 갓초크와 스코투스 에뤼게나 같은 이름이 이따금씩 거명되나 이 교리의 중세적 연속성 혹은 수용성에 대해서는 대체로 함구한다. 본 논문은 예정의 교리에 대한 단절적인 이해의 신학적 이음새를제공하고 하나의 교리에 대한 역사적 연속성 존중의 필요성을 강조하려 한다. 논지의 전개는 중세의 초기와 중기의 예정론 이해를 간략하게 정리하고 중세의 중반과 후반에 해당하는 토마스의 예정론을다루되 에베소서 1장 주석과 예정론을 집요하게 다룬 로마서 9장에대한 주석과 그의 주저인 『신학대전』(Summa theologiae, ST)을 중심으로 탐구하고 택자와 유기자의 이중적인 단일 예정론과 인간의 공로에 대한 예지가 예정의 원인이나 근거가 아니라는 점과 하나님이죄의 저자가 아니라는 주된 사상의 연속성을 밝히고자 한다. 연구의결과에 따르면, 토마스 아퀴나스 사상에 나타난 중세의 예정론은 먼저 성경의 텍스트에 뿌리를 두고 교부들의 가르침 중에 버릴 것은 거부하고 취할 것은 계승하며 절충적인 태도로 자기 시대에 걸맞은 체계화를 시도한 흔적이 뚜렷하다. 토마스의 예정론은 로마서와 에베소서 주석에서 성경적 토대를 확립하고 신학대전 안에서 신학적체계를 구축한다. 주석에 나타난 예정론은 성경 텍스트의 문자를 해석하는 작업에 충실하고, 신학적 체계 속에서는 여덟 개의 질문을 던지고 답을 제시하는 방법으로 예정론의 중세적 관심사를 나타낸다.
Abstract
This paper deals with the doctrine of predestination based on the thought of Thomas Aquinas. This doctrine was not widely taught in the ages of the church fathers and the Reformation but also in the Middle ages. In the previous scholarship, however, there is paucity of research on this issue, though some scholars naming Gottschalk and Scotus Erigena in their studies, but being silent in the theological continuity of predestination thought even in the Middle ages. This paper, thus, is intended to provide the theological bridge to the medieval understanding on the doctrine of predestination. The process of discussion on this issue is, first, to survey the general thought of predestination in the early, the middle, and the late period of the medieval age, to exam Thomas’ biblical exegesis of predestination in his lectures on the Ephesians and Romans, and then to explore his doctrinal formulation of this doctrine in Summa Theologiae. From this study, we may cognize in the thought of Thomas the duplex predestination of election and reprobation, God being not the author of sin, the foreknowledge of human merits not being the cause or reason of predestination, and so forth. Thomas’ doctrine of predestination seems, at least formally, to be grounded in Scripture and the church fathers, especially, Augustine.
