칼빈의 섭리론과 예정론의 관계

본 논문의 목적은 많은 칼빈 연구가들이 밀접성은 인정할지라도 아직 구체 적으로 밝혀내지 못한 칼빈의 섭리론과 예정론의 관계를 밝혀내는 것이다. 칼빈의 섭리론과 예정론의 관계를 말하기 어려운 점은 두 교리의 발전사에 서 기인한다. 예정과 섭리의 관계는 칼빈의 저서 안에서 나타나는 두 주제 의 배치 양상에 따라 1536년, 1539년~1558년, 1559년의 3단계로 구별해 볼 수 있다. 첫째 단계에서 섭리는 주로 창조와 연관하여 진술되고, 예정은 교 회와 연관하여 진술되었다. 두 번째 단계에서는 이와 달리 섭리와 예정을 함께 독립된 항이나 저서에서 다루었다. 세 번째 단계는 1559년 최종판 『 기독교 강요』에서 발견할 수 있는데, 섭리는 I권 창조 부분에서 다루어지 고, 예정은 III권 구원 부분에서 다루어지고 있다. 이러한 두 교리의 관계사 를 보면, 칼빈이 1536년부터 1559년까지 계속해서 섭리를 세 가지로 분류 하고 있다는 점이 드러난다. 그러므로 칼빈이 섭리를 보편섭리와 특별섭리 의 두 종류로 본다는 입장보다는 보편섭리, 특별섭리, 구원섭리 등 세 가지 로 말하고 있다는 입장이 더 타당성이 있어 보인다. 구원섭리와 예정의 연 관성은 섭리가 예정의 궁극적 원인이며, 섭리가 예정을 시행한다는 점에서 확인할 수 있다. 예정의 궁극적 원인으로서의 섭리는 하나님의 의지와 동의어로 쓰이며, 예정의 시행에 관계되는 섭리는 말씀의 선포와 성령의 조 명에 의한 부르심으로 나타난다. 요컨대, 보편섭리와 특별섭리가 창조를 규 정하고 유지하고 보호하는 것처럼, 구원섭리는 예정을 규정하고 시행하여 구원에 이르게 한다. 따라서 예정은 구원섭리로서 섭리의 일부분이며, 칼빈 의 섭리론과 예정론에서 창조와 구원 과정을 모두 지배하는 것은 섭리라고 말할 수 있다.
Abstract
This article explores Calvin’s understanding of providence and predestina- tion which most researchers agree with the two themes are relevant but can not say concretely how they are. It is difficult to say how they are related and it is caused by the history of their development. The relation between providence and predestination can be divided into three steps of 1536, 1539~1558, and 1559 in Calvin's writings. Providence is related to creation and predestination to church in the first step. In the second step, Calvin treated them together in independent article or writings. In the third step in Institutes of the Christian Religion, 1559 edition, Calvin treated providence in vol.Iand predestination in vol. III. Through this course of study, it is revealed that Calvin classified providence into three types. Therefore, it seems more right that Calvin classified provi- dence into three types, universal, special and redemptive than that he did into two types, universal and special providence. The providence is final cause of predestination and it carries predestina- tion into effect. The will of God and the providence as the final cause of predestination is a synonym, and the providence carries predestination into effect through calling by proclaiming the Word and illuminating of the Holy Spirit. In short, redemptive providence ordains predestination and carries it into effect for redemption, as universal and special providence ordain, keep and look after creatures. Accordingly, We can say that predestination as redemptive providence is part of providence, and it is providence that rules all the creation and redemption process in Calvin’s doctrine of providence and predestination.
