Abstract

Today much of the ethical debates on human embryonic stem(hES) cell research focus on the moral status of the embryo, which reveals their patriarchal biases, although the issue of the embryo is still important. Ecofeminist thinkers criticize that without profound considerations of the exploitation of women and the degradation of nature peculiar to hES cell research, any bioethical discourse will turn out to be insufficient and inappropriate. This article tries to give more attention to women’s experience, especially poor women as the donors or sellers of their eggs in the b i o t e c h-market. Furthermore, the author unveils the anti-e c o l o g i c a l tendencies in hES cell research in terms of that it attempts to control the natural organic system of women’s body through the intervention of chemical hormones during the procedure of extracting of eggs. And also, it can be said from the theological perspective that the hES cell therapy would go beyond human limitation by trying to overcome the incurable diseases so that human beings who are affordable to use hES cell therapy can have eternal life. Aiming to articulate what an ecofeminist approach to biotechnology is, this article tries to explain moral diversity among feminist bioethicists which variously emphasize considerations of autonomous choice, social equality, and human relationship as caring. In conclusion, the author proposes today’s biotechnology should be transformed toward a science of compassion in respect for women’s experience and in harmony with nature itself.
