본 논문은 웨스트민스터 표준문서들이 성화에 대해 어떠한 내용을 진술하고 있는지를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해신앙고백서, 대요리문답, 소요리문답을 고찰하였으며, 그 주요한결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 웨스트민스터 표준문서의 성화는 성령에의해, 그리스도의 죽음과 부활을 통하여, 중생자가 전인적으로 하나님의 형상을 따라 실제적이고 개인적으로 새로워지게 하는 하나님의 사역이다. 이 변화는 결정적 측면과 점진적 측면이 있으며, 이생에서는 완성되지 않으나, 내주하시는 성령의 은혜로 잔존하는 죄를이길 수 있다. 둘째, 성화 관련 이슈 중 네 가지를 검토하여 웨스트민스터 표준문서에서 성화의 주체는 하나님, 성화의 방식은 내주하시는 성령의 은혜의 주입, 성화의 모범은 하나님의 형상, 성화의 양상은 주로 점진적이란 결론을 얻었다. 셋째, 성화와 다른 두 가지 주제들의 관련성을 검토하여 그리스도와의 연합이 웨스트민스터 표준문서에서 성화의 중요한 기초가 된다는 것과 선행이 성화와 별개로매우 중요하게 다루어지고 있음을 발견하였다.
Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the concept of sanctification manifested in the Westminster Standards. In order to do this, Confession of faith, Larger Catechism and Shorter Catechism were reviewed. Major findings are like these. First, sanctification in the Westminster Standards is a God’s work whereby the regenerated person is renewed in the whole man really and personally after the image of God, through Christ’s death and resurrection, by the Holy Spirit. This change is both definitive and progressive, cannot be perfected in this life, but the regenerated person can overcome the struggle against remaining sin with the help of indwelling Holy Spirit. Second, review of four sanctification related issues reveals that the subject is only God, the way is infusion of grace by the indwelling Holy Spirit, the pattern is the image of God, and the mode is mainly progressive. Third, the relationship between sanctification and two other issues shows the importance of union with Christ in sanctification and strong emphasis on the doctrine of good works respectively.
