초록

본 논문의 목적은 웨스트민스터 신앙고백 25장의 교회 정의에 대한 진술들을 분석해 이 신앙고백이 보여주는 역사적 상황을 반영한 진술의 특징과 더불어 이 신앙고백이 견지하는 일관된 개혁주의 교회론의 신학적 요점을 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 먼저 웨스트민스터 신앙고백의 역사적 배경과 교회론과 관련한 논의의 전개 과정, 그리고 이 신앙고백에 사용된 자료들에 대해 다룬다. 3장은 이런 역사적 배경 위에서 웨스트민스터 신앙고백 25장이 교회를 정의할 때 시대적인 상황으로부터 나타난 두 가지 특징적인 진술들을 분석한다. 그것은 가시적 교회의 보편성을 명시한 것과 교회의 표지를 교회의 순수성에 대한 평가적 표지라고 진술한 점이다. 4장에서는 진술상의 특징과 관련해 칼빈과 이후 개혁파 신앙고백들을 비교 분석하여 웨스트민스터 신앙고백이 견지한 두 가지 개혁주의적 교회론으로서의 신학적 요점을 규명한다. 이 두 가지 신학적 요점은 하나님의 주권 아래 유지되는 교회의 영속성에 대한 확신과 교회의 머리이신 예수 그리스도의 절대적 주권을 교회 안에서 구현하려는 헌신이다. 개혁파 교회는 그 교회가 처해 있는 독특한 시대적 상황에 맞추어 그들의 신앙을 진술하여 채택해 왔고 웨스트민스터 신앙고백의 교회 정의 역시 이런 다양성을 잘 보여준다. 그러나 웨스트민스터 신앙고백은 이전의 개혁파 신앙고백들과 함께 교회 안의 인간적 요소들이 갖는 한계를 강조함으로써 교회를 세우시고 사용하시는 하나님의 은혜를 강조하고 머리이신 그리스도의 통치를 구현하려는 일관된 신학적 요점들을 포기하지 않고 고백해 왔다.

Abstract

This study aims to illuminate the characteristics of definition of the Church which are resulted from the historical situation, and the consistent theological points of reformed ecclesiological in chapter 25 of the Westminster Confession of Faith. For this purpose, this study first deals with the historical background of the Westminster Assembly, the process of discussion concerning church government in this Assembly, and the sources of the Confession. After this background review, two characteristic statements in the definition of the Church in 25 chapter of the Westminster Confession are analysed: the Catholicity of the visible Church, and the description of the evaluative marks of the purity of the Church. In the next part, the paper examines two consistent theological points in the definition of the Church Westminster Confession by comparing it with the other reformed confessions: assurance of the permanence of the Church in the sovereign grace of God, and commitment to realize the authority of Christ, the sole head of the Church, in church government. Reformed churches have written and established their own confessions according to their specific historical situations. Definition of the Church in the Westminster Confession also shares this features of variety in the reformed tradition. However, the Westminster Confession never fails to confess the consistent focal points of reformed ecclesiology. These theological points are everlasting grace of God for His Church, and absolute authority of Christ, the head of the Church. Reformed confessions have stressed these points with the idea of weakness of human elements in the Church.
