Abstract
Alfred N. Whitehead, one of modern Western philosophers, founded ‘process philosophy.’ His philosophy has been influencing on many areas such as theology, religion, science, art, and culture. As he expressed that his philosophy was very close to Eastern thoughts, his philosophy of process has been used as a major tool for interreligious dialogue and comparative study of regions. Particularly, his philosophy is expected to make a significant contribution for peace in the world in times of conflicts among religions. Process philosophy which was developed in the United States in the 20 century was greatly influenced by Whitehead’s philosophy of process. Whitehead’s philosophy is also called ‘philosophy of organism’ and it regards the universe as a living organism that has impact on one another in all thing of the world. His philosophy opposes the traditional worldview that is fixed and static. Whitehead embraced a theme of religion in his philosophy. The theory of religion he proposed gives a new insight to theology and the study of religion. He insisted that religion started from individual’s loneliness and internal dimension. He proposed ‘panentheism’ that understood God as the one who was one of actual entities and transcended actual entities at the same time, had both primordial nature and consequent nature. His panentheism is a new concept of God which is composed of theism and pantheism. It is very helpful to complement the problems of traditional theism. For him, a concept of God is a final one that completes his cosmology. Whitehead assures God’s goodness without paradoxes and perversions repeatedly appeared in traditional Christian doctrines. He also explains convincingly power of God. In particular, his concept of God makes us recognize the mutual relation between God and the world and importance of dynamic creation in divine life. Whitehead criticized some concepts of God applied to Western traditional Christianity in history. Those concepts are God as an aboriginal, eminently real, transcendent creator, an imperial ruler, a personification of moral energy, the unmoved mover, and an ultimate philosophical principle. These concepts of God are far away from Christianity of the Galilean origin. Therefore, whitehead attempts to provide a new concept of God, analyzing various concepts of God in the history of world religions. In this article, the author first explores a general scheme of process cosmology which is a foundation of process philosophy and then studies Whitehead’s panentheism with a special attention. In conclusion, the author examines how this study influences the making of Christian spirituality and finally suggests the significance and limitations of this study and some tasks for the further study.
