존 칼빈의 공교회적 삼위일체론 이해와 신학적 공헌

초록

‘삼위일체 교리’(the Doctrine of the Trinity)는 기독교의 성경적인 신이해의 정수를 요약하는 것임과 동시에 하나의 전체로서 기독교 신학의 총괄이자 신앙고백의 핵심 기초이다. 특히 고대 동/서방교회의주요 교부 신학자들에 의한 위대한 신학적 기여들을 통하여 ‘공교회(보편교회)의 고전적 정통 삼위일체 교리’에 대한 신학적 이해와 발전 그리고 확립이 이루어졌다. 그리고 종교개혁기에 있어 삼위일체론 교리와 관련하여 가장 독창적인 신학적 기여를 한 신학자는 존 칼빈(John Calvin, 1517-1564)이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는칼빈이 그의 『기독교 강요』(Institutes of the Christian Religion)에서전개한 삼위일체론을 집중적으로 분석함으로서, 그의 중요한 신학적 특징들과 독창적인 공헌들에 대하여 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 우리는 먼저, 16세기 반(反)삼위일체자들과의 논쟁 속에서 칼빈의 신학적 이해가 어떻게 발전되어 갔는지를 간단히 살펴보았다. 나아가그의 교의학적 주저인 『기독교 강요』(Institutes of the Christian Religion) 최종판(1559)에 나타난 삼위일체론 이해에 대한 집중적인탐구를 통하여 그의 신학적 이해에 있어 공교회적 특징들에 대한 비판적 계승에 있어 특징적인 요소들과 신학적 배경이 과연 무엇인지를 살펴봄과 동시에 칼빈 자신의 독창적인 신학적 공헌들이 무엇인지 분석하였다. 결론적으로 말하자면, 실로 고대 정통 교부 신학자들과 니케아-콘스탄티노플 공의회를 통하여 정립된 ‘공교회의 고전적 정통 삼위일체 교리’는 바로 존 칼빈의 이전의 정통적 견해들에 대한비판적인 계승과 더불어 그 자신의 독창적인 이해와 신학적 기여에의하여 비로소 온전하게 완성되었음이 드러났다. 또한 마지막으로그러한 칼빈의 ‘공교회적 정통 삼위일체 교리’에 대한 이해가 오늘날 한국교회의 왜곡된 삼위일체론 이해를 올바로 교정함에 있어 어떻게 도움을 줄 수 있는지를 살펴보았다.

Abstract

The doctrine of the Trinity is the very essence of Christian biblical understanding of God, the summary of Christian theology as a whole, and the ground-foundation of confession of faith. Especially, ‘the classical orthodox doctrine of the Trinity of the catholic church’ had been developed and established by the ancient Eastern/Western Church Fathers. In the era of Reformation, however, it was John Calvin(1517-1564) who made the most creative theological contributions in the doctrine of the Trinity. Therefore, in this study, I analyzed Calvin’s important theological factors and contributions for the doctrine of the Trinity in his Institutes of the Christian Religion. For this, firstly, I examined historically the development of his theological thought in the doctrine of the Trinity in the controversies with the anti-trinitarianists of the 16th century. And then, I analyzed his theological magnum opus, Institutes of the Christian Religion(1559) for his critical successions of the classical doctrine of the Trinity and his own creative theological contributions. In conclusion, ‘the classical orthodox doctrine of the Trinity of the catholic church’ was successfully completed and more firmly established in Calvin’s understanding of the doctrine of the Trinity. Finally, I suggested a helpful propositions for a more proper understanding in church of Korea according to ‘the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity of the catholic church’.
