최근 분석철학적 전통에서 인식론을 연구하는 많은 철학자들은 임의의지식 이론이 충분한 설명적 역할을 수행하기 위해 지식의 가치와 관련된 다음의 세 가지 질문들에 답변할 수 있어야 한다고 주장한다. (a) 왜지식은 단지 참인 믿음에 불과한 것보다 더 큰 가치를 가지는가? (b) 왜지식은 지식이 되지 못한 어느 인식 상태보다도 더 큰 가치를 가지는가? (c) 왜 지식은 지식이 되지 못한 어느 인식 상태와도 질적으로 구분되는가치를 가지는가? 그런데 이러한 문제는 종교적 지식 이론들 특히 기독교 지식 이론들로확장될 수 있다. 따라서 임의의 기독교 지식 이론은 충분한 설명적 역할을 수행하기 위해 기독교 지식의 가치와 관련된 다음의 세 가지 질문들에 답변할 수 있어야 한다. (1) 왜 기독교 지식은 단지 참인 기독교 믿음에 불과한 것보다 더 큰 가치를 가지는가? (2) 왜 기독교 지식은 기독교지식이 되지 못한 어느 기독교적 인식 상태보다도 더 큰 가치를 가지는가? (3) 왜 기독교 지식은 기독교 지식이 되지 못한 어느 기독교적 인식상태와도 질적으로 구분되는 가치를 가지는가? 본 논문에서는 올바른 기능주의 인식론에 의거한 개혁주의 인식론은 기독교 지식에 대한 가치 문제를 해결하는 데에 실패하지만 신빙주의 덕인식론에 의거한 개혁주의 인식론은 기독교 지식에 대한 가치 문제를 해결하는 데에 성공적이라는 것을 보여줄 것이다. 우선 II절에서는 지식에 대한 가치 문제를 기독교 지식에 적용함으로써 기독교 지식에 대한가치 문제를 새롭게 고찰할 것이다. 이어서 III절에서는 올바른 기능주의 인식론에 의거한 개혁주의 인식론이 뒤덮음 문제를 해결하는 데에실패한다는 것을 지적함으로써 기독교 지식에 대한 가치 문제를 해결하는 데에 실패한다는 것을 논증할 것이다. 다음으로 IV절에서는 강건한덕 인식론에 의거한 개혁주의 인식론이 기독교 지식에 대한 가치 문제를 해결하는 데에 실패할 수밖에 없다는 반론을 새롭게 소개할 것이다. 마지막으로 V절에서는 반위험 덕 인식론에 의거한 방식으로 본 논문에서 새롭게 제안한 개혁주의 인식론이 기독교 지식에 대한 가치 문제를해결하는 데에 성공적이라는 것을 논증할 것이다.
Abstract
In recent years, many analytic epistemologists have argued that a theory of knowledge should be able to answer the following three questions concerning the value of knowledge to play a sufficient explanatory role: (a) why is knowledge more valuable than mere true belief? (b) why is knowledge more valuable than any epistemic standing falling short of knowledge? (c) why is knowledge qualitatively more valuable than any epistemic standing falling short of knowledge? Moreover, this problem can be extended to theories of religious knowledge, especially theories of Christian knowledge. Therefore, a theory of Christian knowledge should be able to answer the following three questions concerning the value of Christian knowledge to play a sufficient explanatory role: (1) why is Christian knowledge more valuable than mere true Christian belief? (2) why is Christian knowledge more valuable than any Christian epistemic standing falling short of Christian knowledge? (3) why is Christian knowledge qualitatively more valuable than any Christian epistemic standing falling short of Christian knowledge? This paper shows that not Reformed epistemology based on proper functionalist epistemology but Reformed epistemology based on reliabilist virtue epistemology successfully solves the value problem for Christian knowledge. Section II newly examines the value problem for Christian knowledge by applying the value problem for knowledge to Christian knowledge. Section III argues that Reformed epistemology based on proper functionalist epistemology fails to solve the value problem for Christian knowledge by pointing out that it fails to solve the swamping problem. Section IV introduces a new objection that Reformed epistemology based on robust virtue epistemology fails to solve the value problem for Christian knowledge. Section V argues that a new version of Reformed epistemology based on anti-risk virtue epistemology successfully solves the value problem for Christian knowledge.
