데카르트와 화이트헤드의 창조 이론 : 자유와 이율배반의 문제

화이트헤드와 데카르트는 모두 신의 계속적 창조를 주장하고, 신의 창조가 과거와 현재의 계기 사이에 있는 존재론적 틈새 혹은 동시성에 위치한다고 보는 점에서 동질적이다. 또 신은 세계를 향해 명령/유혹한다는 점에서 그리고 세계는 신의 명령에 순응한다는 점에서도 동질적이다. 반면 데카르트와 화이트헤드의 자유 이론은 서로 매우 이질적이다. 먼저 데카르트는 순수한 비결정성을 추상하여 그것을 주체의 자유의지로규정하지만, 화이트헤드는 하나의 주체는 이미 물리적으로 결정되어 있다고 본다. 또 데카르트는 신의 명령에 순종하는 것을 더 높은 등급의 자유로 이해하지만, 화이트헤드는 신의 유혹조차 부정적으로 파악할 수있는 주체의 고유한 결단을 진정한 자유로 이해한다. 더 나아가 데카르트의 창조 이론이 윤리학에 기반하는 데 반해 화이트헤드는 미학에 기초한다는 점에서 이 두 철학은 결정적으로 달라진다. 양적인 분석이 더용이한 윤리학은 신의 명령과 주체의 판단 사이의 정도 차이를 규정할수 있지만 고유한 질적 느낌을 대상으로 하는 미학은 신의 유혹과 주체의 판단 사이에 정도 차이를 규명할 수 없다. 따라서 신-인 관계와 자유의 문제에 있어 데카르트의 철학은 나름의 위계질서를 구축하여 이율배반에 빠지지 않지만, 화이트헤드의 철학은 이율배반에 빠진다. 즉 한 주체의 결단이 신의 유혹을 긍정한 것인지 부정한 것인지 판단할 수 있는기준 자체가 그의 철학에는 부재한다. 하지만 이는 화이트헤드 철학의결함이 아닌 고유한 특성을 조성한다. 신과 세계의 이율배반을 통해 신과 세계가 상호 공존하는 역설이 발생하기 때문이다. 그리고 이러한 역설적 신관은 과정신학에 그대로 수용된다.
Abstract
Whitehead and Descartes are homogeneous in that they both claim God’s continuous creation and see God’s creation as being located in an ontological gap or simultaneity between past and present moments. Also, God is homogeneous in that he commands/tempts the world, and the world obeys God’s commands. On the other hand, Descartes’ and Whitehead’s theories of freedom are very different from each other. First, Descartes abstracts pure indeterminacy and defines it as the subject’s free will, but Whitehead believes that a subject is already physically determined. Also, while Descartes understands obedience to God’s commands as a higher level of freedom, Whitehead understands the subject’s unique decision to perceive even God’s temptation negatively as true freedom. Furthermore, these two philosophies are crucially different in that Descartes’ theory of creation is based on ethics, whereas Whitehead’s is based on aesthetics. Ethics, which is easier to analyze quantitatively, can define the degree difference between God’s command and the subject’s judgment, but aesthetics, which targets unique qualitative feelings, cannot determine the degree difference between God’s temptation and the subject’s judgment. Therefore, in matters of God-human relationship and freedom, Descartes’s philosophy does not fall into antinomies by establishing its own hierarchy, but Whitehead’s philosophy falls into antinomies. In other words, the standard by which one can judge whether a subject’s decision affirms or denies God’s temptation is absent in his philosophy. However, this is not a flaw in Whitehead’s philosophy, but creates a unique characteristic. This is because the paradox of God and the world coexisting through the antinomy of God and the world arises. And this paradoxical view of God is accepted as is in process theology.
