칼뱅의 성찬 신학과 포스트 코로나 시대 ― 토드 빌링스의 ‘실체’(substantia) 언어 분석을 중심으로

본고는 칼뱅의 성찬 신학의 관점으로 포스트코로나 시대의 당면한 이슈 가운데 하나인 ‘온라인 성찬’을 신학적으로 성찰하고자 하는 시도이다. 최근 팬데믹 상황의 장기화로 인해 기존 방식대로 현장 예배를 진 행하는 것이 어려워지면서 온라인 성찬 시행에 대한 논의가 구체화되고 있다. 하지만, 이에 대한 신학적 안내와 조율을 위한 논의는 상대적으로 미흡한 상황이다. 따라서 성찬의 방식을 논의하기 이전에 성찬의 본질(실체)가 무엇인지 다시 확인하고 성찰하는 신학적 작업과 재교육이 필요한 것으로 보인다. 이런 관점에서 본고는 칼뱅 사상에 기반을 두어 먼저, 성찬의 본질인 그리스도의 몸과 연관된 ‘실체’ 언어를 하나님 형상, 성례전, 신적 조정과 같은 신학 주제를 중심으로 분석하고, 칼뱅의 성찬 신학의 역사적 배경을 살펴보았다. 그리고 온라인 성찬을 지지하는 입장과 반대하는 입장에 대한 개혁 신학의 응답으로 칼뱅이 제시하는 성찬의 세 가지 유익을 설명하였고, 마지막으로는 오늘날 팬데믹 시대에 대처하기 위한 적절한 제안으로 칼뱅의 생명의 성찬 사상을 소개하였다. 본고를 통해 16세기 흑사병이 만연한 유럽에서 칼뱅을 중심으로 전개된 성찬신학이 당시 제네바 교회와 사회를 위한 통전적이고 유기적인 사랑과 생명의 통로였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 칼뱅의 성찬신학 을 통해 오늘날 포스트코로나 시대 및 메타버스와 같은 다양한 도전 앞에서 서 있는 한국교회가 그리스도의 생명 나눔이라는 성찬의 실체를 유기적으로 경험하고, 다른 한편으로 이웃과 인격적으로 나누면서, 하나님 나라의 통전적 실재성을 교회와 사회 모두에 구현하는 ‘항상 개혁되는 교회’로 나아가기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This study is an attempt to theologically reflect on ‘online communion,’ an immediate issue in the post-corona era, from the perspective of Calvin’s theology of Eucharist. The prolonged pandemic has made conventional on-site worship difficult; as a result, online communion has become perceived as a necessary alternative. However, theological guidance for online communion is as of yet insufficient. Thus, before engaging in online communion, theological re-foundation and re-education are necessary to reconfirm and reflect on the essence of worship. Based on Calvin’s thought, this thesis first analyzes the ‘substantia’ language relating to the body of Christ, the essence of the Eucharist, by focusing on theological topics such as the image of God, the sacraments, and divine accommodation. This thesis then situates these ideas within the historical background of Calvin's Eucharistic theology. Furthermore, this thesis explains the three benefits of the Lord’s Supper as presented by Calvin Reformed theology’s response to the positions for and against the online sacrament. Finally, this thesis introduces Calvin’s idea of the Eucharist of Life as an appropriate approach to cope with the ongoing pandemic. This thesis confirms that Calvin’s Eucharistic theology in Geneva, where the Black Death was rampant in the 16th century, served as a holistic and organic channel of love and life for the church and society at the time. This thesis further proposes that in aligning with Calvin’s theology of the Eucharist, the Korean Church can withstand the various challenges of the post-corona era and emerging metaverse, and can further organically experience the Eucharist, the sharing of Christ's life, and share in this reality. At the same time, this thesis hopes that the Korean church will advance into an “always reformed church” that embodies the holistic reality of the kingdom of God in both the church and society.
