Abstract

This paper is a study of the philosophy of Henri Bergson, widely known as a living philosopher as the author of Creative Evolution (1907), and his religious ideas. The purpose of this study is to exam- ine the modern meaning of life and freedom by analyzing the epis- temology of Bergson’s life principles in a reality where the social in- fluence of religion is gradually decreasing through the technological revolution of modern science and the discord and conflict between science and religion are sharply increasing. In particular, the re- searcher hopes that this study will enable active follow-up research in the field of theology, especially in the reality that research related to Bergson’s philosophy has been very poor in Protestant theology in Korea. Above all, Bergson’s last book deals with the themes of ethics and religious philosophy. Christian theology needs to deepen the study of Bergson’s philosophy in various fields in that the meta- physics of his evolutionary biological philosophy is finally completed by an ethics that aims for universal humanity for an open society and a Christian mystical spirit. The methodology of Bergson’s philosophy began with a life science interest in what human beings are and where we came from. In other words, his phenomenological method of human consciousness combined natural epistemology and meta- physics to systematize biological and cosmological metaphysics suit- able for the two fundamental human essences of intelligence and instinct. According to Bergson, the structure of the human mind and consciousness, and its form are dynamically defined as unified move- ments within the material world and personality through the duration and intuition of time. Bergson argues that human habitual intellectual ability cannot properly capture the fluid idea of time that cannot be physically divided. In the end, Bergson’s assertion that intelligence was a major obstacle to our consciousness of the real time in which we live demanded the need for an epistemological subversion to drastically transform Western philosophy as a whole. He saw that life phenomena, the creation of existence, and constant creativity could never be recognized through the artificial work of intelligence, the laws of nature. Thus, his philosophy conceptualized life metaphysics through instinctive intuition. Additionally, his religious philosophy emphasized Christianity’s connection with the absolute through mystical intuition. By expanding God’s love, which was defined as love itself, to anthropological humanity, he sought to promote a free civil society and democratic political beliefs worldwide. Therefore, reli- gious thought, which was his last area of study in his philosophy, contains his desire to realize the spirit of Christian love in real life.
