본 논문은, 기독교 신학과 윤리적 실천, 그리고 정치의 영역은 분리될 수 없음을 주장한다. 이것은 하나님 나라의 새로운 실제를 사는 교회와 그리스도인들이라는 증인들을 통해 증명된다. 이것을 뒷받침하기 위해 본 논문은 기독교 윤리학자인 스탠리 하우어워스의 신학적 윤리를 살펴보고 이 개념을 사용할 것이다. 하우어워스의 신학적 윤리의 배경과 의도, 그리고 한국적 맥락에 대한 변용을, 함께 제시함으로써 논문 주장의 유용함을 주장 한다. 먼저 본 논문은 기독교 신학과 윤리는 분리되지 않음을 칼 바르트의 신학을 토대로 주장한다. 바르트에게 신학은 모든 지점에서 복음의 중심에 서 있는 그리스도를 명확하게 가리키는 교회의 과제이다. 이것은 신자로 하여금 '그리스도 안'이라고 하는 진정한 실제를 다시금 돌아보게 한다. 이러한 '그리스도 안'에서 성도와 교회의 삶은 이해된다는 신학적 토대 위에 하우어워스의 신학적 윤리는 펼쳐진다. 즉, 도덕 주체자인 한 인간은 그리스도 안에서 계시된 하나님의 이야기 안에서 도덕적 행위에 대한 인격적 정당성, 즉 성품을 얻게 된다. 하우어워스는 성품의 강조를 통해 정치적 자유주의에 동조하는 콘스탄틴주의 또는 기독교 순응주의를 거부한다. 이러한 자유주의이론에 중심이 되는 임마누엘 칸트의 윤리, 그리고 존 롤즈의 정의 이론 등을 하우어워스는 비판하며 개인의 특정한 역사성과, 성품, 이야기를 거부하는 자유주의 이론에 동조하는 것은 콘스탄틴적 순응주의의 덫에 빠지는 것이라고 주장한다. 그 대신 하우어워스는 세상과의 타협없이 교회 그 자체가 바로 증인으로서 하나의 정치이며 윤리라고 말한다. 공동체의 성경 읽기와 예배를 통해 교회는 하나님의 실제를 살아내는 것이 어떻게 낯설고 헐벗은 이들을 환대하며 비폭력의 삶을 살아가는 증인으로서의 삶을 살아가는 것인지 배우며 세상에 드러낸다. 그 과정 속에서 교회는 죄를 고백하며 그리스도를 모방하는 제자의 삶을 각 지역의 교회에서 살아감으써 그리스도의 증인으로서 특정적이며, 동시에 지역성을 담보하는 공적 영역의 윤리를 아우른다. 즉, 개별 성도와 교회의 선교의 자리야말로 공적영역을 살아가는 증인으로서의 삶이라고 하우어워스는 강조한다.
Abstract
This article argues that Christian theology, ethical practice, and politics cannot be separated. This is proved by the church and Christians who live out the reality of the kingdom of God. To support the argument, this article will examine the ethics of Stanely Hauerwas and use it. This study shows the usefulness of the discussion with the foundation and intention of Hauerwas’s theological ethic and its contextual transformation in a Korean context. This article shows the relationship between Christian theology and ethic on the foundation of Karl Barth’s theology. For Barth, Christian theology is a task of the church by which Christ in the center of the gospel is pointed from every aspect of human life. This makes the Christian look back on the true reality, ‘in Christ.’ This ‘in Christ’ is the base of Hauerwas’s theological ethics. A person as a moral agent attains in God’s story, revealed in Christ, character, that is, a personal justification for the ethical decision. With the emphasis on character, Hauerwas denies Constantinianism or Christian accommodation. As criticizing Immanuel Kant’s ethics and John Rawls’s theory of justice which are the foundation of moral and political liberalism, Hauerwas argues with liberalism which rejects all particularity of human history, character, and story. Instead, Hauerwas points out that the church is a politics and ethics without any accommodation with the world as the witness. Through a communal reading of Scripture and worship, the church shows how to be God’s witness who lives God’s reality and welcomes the poor and strangers with a non-violent life. In the procedure, the church confesses its sin and imitates Christ. As local churches live the life of the disciples of Christ, they embrace the particularity of the witness and the publicity of ethics, which guarantees locality. Hauerwas emphasizes that the missional life of individual Christians and the church is the life of the witnesses in the public square.
