Abstract
This paper explores the theological and practical significance of John Howard Yoder’s pacifist theology in relation to contemporary ecu- menical ecclesiology. While modern ecumenical efforts have predom- inantly emphasized institutional and doctrinal unity, they have often lacked a coherent ethical foundation. The World Council of Churches (WCC) and its “Just Peace” framework, for instance, illustrate ongoing challenges in articulating a theologically grounded vision of non- violence and moral agency within the church. Through critical engagement with Yoder’s major writings, this study investigates how his concept of nonviolent discipleship presents an alternative vision of church unity. For Yoder, pacifism is not merely a political position but the ethical mode of the church’s witness and existence in the world. Although rooted in the Mennonite tradition, his theological vision―centered on what he terms “radical catholi- city”― transcends denominational boundaries and fosters meaningful engagement among diverse Christian communities. The study argues that Yoder reorients the ecumenical task by shifting the focus from structural integration to a shared commitment to eth- ical discipleship. In his framework, pacifism is not peripheral or op- tional but a central manifestation of Christian faithfulness. By em- bodying peace as a communal way of life, churches may overcome division and hostility without compromising theological integrity. The key findings of this paper are as follows: first, Yoder’s pacifism provides a constructive theological foundation for practical ecumen- ism; second, it offers a compelling alternative to the limitations of cur- rent ecumenical discourse, which often neglects the ethical dimension of ecclesial unity. The paper concludes that Yoder’s pacifist ecclesiol- ogy offers critical insights for contemporary ecumenical dialogue ― particularly in the Korean context, where historical, theological, and denominational divisions remain deeply entrenched.
