본 논문은 1960년대 한국의 시네마스코프 영화의 스타일과 50년대 할리우드 시네마스코프 영화의 스타일을 비교분석하여, 한국의 시네마스코프 영화가 얼마나 정교하게 할리우드의 시네마스코프 영화의 문법을 구사함으로써 ‘몰입적’ 영화 이미지를 구축했는지를 볼 것이다. 이와 같은 할리우드 시네마스코프 영화와 한국 시네마스코프 영화 스타일의 비교연구를 통해, 60년대 유행한 한국의 시네마스코프 영화 제작에 대한 지금까지의 시네마스코프 영화 제작기술과 와이드스크린 극장 중심의 역사적 이해를 보다 영화 이미지의 구성과 수용적 측면에서 바라보고자 한다. 본 논문은 새로운 영화제작과 상영기술의 도입뿐만 아니라, 새로운 영화 스타일의 도입 또한 영화 테크놀로지의 범주로 간주함으로써, 영화 테크놀로지의 개념을 확장하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 덧붙여, 본 논문은 한국 영화의 역사를 영화 테크놀로지 그리고 스타일 비교적 관점에서 재역사화 하는 새로운 한국영화 연구의 흐름을 형성하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper looks at how articulately the Korean CinemaScope movies of the 1960s followed the immersive visual style of Hollywood CinemaScope established in the 1950s. To this aim, this paper will comparatively analyze the visual stlye of The Robe, a classic example of a Hollywood CinemaScope film and the following Korean CinemaScope films of the early 1960s: The Love Story of Chun-hyang(1961), Evergreen Tree(1961), Prince Yeonsan(1961), Tyrant Yeonsan(1962). In doing so, I hope to show that the Korean CinemaScope movies of the period provide an immersive cinematic experience for the audience as did Hollywood CinemaScope films. This comparative approach towards the widescreen histories of Hollywood and Korean cinema is an attempt to re-frame the understanding of the history of Korean widescreen films from the perspective of visual storytelling instead of a reaction to the emergence of widescreen technology and theatres.
