Abstract
The association of tone and color or music and art has been an interesting topic since ancient Greece. However, it was the 18th century that the realization of the idea was achieved by the invention of the world’s earliest color organ. Afterwards, many musicians and creators developed various color organs. While inventors in the eighteenth and nineteenth century intended to express direct association between light and sound through their instruments, most color organ creators in the twentieth century were fascinated with pure light manipulation with no connection to sound. Most theories of tone-to-color translation were proposed between the eighteenth century and the twentieth century and they were closely related to the development of color organs. Thus this study investigated a brief history of chromatic music through the examination of the theoretical and the technical features of color organs from the 18th to the 20th century.
