Abstract
During the nineteenth century, acoustics was established as a subfield of physics on the basis of experiment and mathematics. In this course, music and acoustics developed in close interaction between each other. Various musical instruments became primary sound sources in acoustical experiments and musical-instrument makers undertook scientific investigations for improving and creating instruments. Responding to the needs of the music world for reasonable temperaments and absolute pitches, acousticians played an important role of providing them with the theoretical and quantitative foundations. It was through sympathy between the102 two fields that 'musical science' was regarded as an imperative subject for musical students.
