Abstract
The concept of unity of auditory and visual features has have a long history since the time of ancient Greece. The correlation between pitch-height and color has been investigated as a topic of interest in many areas including music, visual art, science, especially since the invention of the world’s earliest color organ. Recent developments of digital computing technology have made the harmony of pitch-height and color easier in various art and commercial works including game. Therefore this study examined specific pitch-heights and their correlated colors in order to provide a more meaningful association between them. In particular, the inspection focused on whether the differences of music education, pitch perception ability and gender affect the matching colors to pitch-heights. First, the theoretical background of the relationship between pitch-height and color proposed by many scholars was explored. Then, this study inquired which pitch-height was closely related to which color with 57 undergraduate students in their 20’s. The results of it were processed in Excel for counting and analyzing the frequencies and the percentages of the chosen colors. And the correlation among groups were calculated. As a result, C4 was highly related to indigo and violet, whereas B4 and C5 were related to red and yellow. The notes between D4 and A4 tended to be matched with rainbow colors in order. Also, it was revealed that the ability of pitch perception was an important factor in a color selection for a pitch-height, while musical education and gender had no significant effects on the mapping between pitch-height and color.
