Abstract

For Dewey, art represents the most vivid and enriched exemplification of integral and consummatory experience, one that frees humans from relationships of exploitation and domination with their environment, leading them to a state of harmony and oneness. By advancing his distinctive theory of art, Dewey provides a new framework for understanding art, asserting that it should be regarded as “the greatest intellectual achievement in the history of humanity.” The objective of this study is twofold: to 1) establish a conceptual definition of art grounded in Dewey’s exploration of the continuity between art and ordinary life and 2) uncover the educational characteristics inherent in the concept of art through the lens of the continuity between ends and means. Dewey contends that art arises from ordinary life, returns to it, and contributes to its improvement and enhancement. This study develops Dewey’s functionalist approach to the relationship between art and ordinary life to delving into the qualitative identity of art and education. Within this framework, the aesthetic experience understood as the purpose of art is presented as a opportunity that frees education from mechanical causality. Dewey’s perspective on great art is framed as a constructive viewpoint that conceptually enriches the idea of growth recognized as the objective of education. To systematically develops this argument, this study applies Dewey’s empirical method comprehensively to his theory of art.
