Abstract
In general, Nazism art strongly against modernism which as an artistic avant-garde. The slogan “entartete Kunst” shows this perspective. However, the utopian perspective of technology is highlighted in the Nazism art that claims anti-modernism, which is mostly influenced by Neue Sachlichkeit. Arnold Fanck’s film brought a significant influence on the film art of the Nazi era with his Mountain film, ‘der Topos des Verkehrs (the topos of Traffic) in Rennsportfilme (motor race film), and ‘Fliegertopos (the topos of a pilot)’ on the new technology of the airplanes, etc. This phenomenon would be called as modernization of technology or reactionary modernism in the sense of an extension of the modernism. Modernization of Nazism technology that follows the traditional technology materialism after Neue Sachlichkeit is related with not only the discourse of ‘solid steel romanticism’ which claims to be romantic and steel-like, but also a biological aesthetic theory based on the racism that predicates upon the utopian horizon. This correlation can contemplate with Ernst Jünger, who was interested in the relationship between the war and new technology based on the political romanticism foundation. In the perspective of Neue Sachlichkeit, he suggests this correlation with fascism aesthetics by developing positive opinions about the war; the body as a machine and steel-like form in the war created the new human being and races, the technology of the war has maintained human life and civilization on the anthropological horizon. This point of view is an aesthetic phenomenon that generally appears in Nazi art, which prominent in cultural films and war films. Especially, as Avant-garde artistic films influenced by Neue Sachlichkeit, cultural films can be considered by Walter Ruttmann and Willy Zielke. Furthermore, among the cultural films, not only the air force films that emphasize Fliegertopos, but also the air force film as dramatic war films are highlighting the Utopia of war technology. In this process, aesthetic features such as the convergence of human and technology, the accuracy and speed of technology, and the reporting of mythical heroes are emphasized. Fliegertopos aestheticizes fascism and war by highlighting the hero of neoteny in the motif of eternal youth. Rennsportfilme as a fascinating film also presents a similar utopia of technology.
