본 논문은 1920년대 주요 ‘도시교향곡 영화’들을 분석의 대상으로 삼아 테크놀로지의 유토피아적 표상이 영상 텍스트 속에서 어떠한 사회·문화적 환경 하에 어떻게 드러나는지를 고찰한 연구의 결과물이다. 1920년대미국과 서유럽, 동유럽 각국 및 각지의 도시교향곡 영화에는 기계-기술적 요소의 삽입을 통한 테크놀로지 사회의 유토피아적 표상이 적지 않게 함유되어 있다. 당시 도시교향곡 영화는 도시화의 진전이라는 시대적 조류와 기술 낙관주의적인 철학적 인식을 배경에 두고 있었다. 이에, 텍스트 내에서는 다양한 영화 기법을 통해기계-기술의 이미지가 화면을 수놓고 있으며 도시 공간의 기계화 현상이 드러나 있기도 하다. 하지만, 동시기도시교향곡 영화가 모두 테크놀로지의 유토피아적 상(像)을 지배적으로 투영하고 있었던 것은 아니다. 그럼에도 기계의 일상화 경향을 비판적으로 그리거나 탈기술주의적 광경을 묘사하는 경우에서조차 유토피아 세계의 복원에 대한 인류의 내재적(혹은 잠재적) 욕망을 발견하는 일이 가능하다.
Abstract
This paper is the result of the study of how the representations of technological utopia were revealedin the 1920’s ‘City Symphony Films’ under social and cultural environment. 1920’s City SymphonyFilms which were produced in the United States, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe included notconsiderably utopian representations of technological society through the insertion of mechanical andtechnological elements. The City Symphony Film was based on the philosophical recognition of thetechnological optimism and the progress of urbanization, which was the flow of the period. Therefore,in the these films, images of machine-technology were embroidered on the screen by variouscinematic techniques, and phenomenon of mechanized urban space is also revealed. However, notall of the City Symphony Films in this period dominantly projected the image of technological utopia. Nonetheless, it is possible to discover the intrinsic(or potential) desire of mankind for the restorationof the utopian world, even in case of describing machine's in daily life from a critical perspective orpost-technological landscapes.
